I would be tempted to leave it as Alpinia chinensis for the benefit of the horticulturalists, listing Alpinia suishaensis [see below] as a modern synonym.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia conchigera Griffith: OK, but there was also an Alpinia conchigera Schumann (now Alpinia siamensis Schumann). I feel queasy about this one. I looked at Griffith's manuscript at the Kew library a few years ago, and it consisted only of fragmentary notes. Schumann's reports are printed publications, and Rosemary Smith has vouched for Alpinia siamensis. Again, maybe you should list it as conchigera, with a modern synonym siamensis

The Study of Zingiberaceae in Thailand, by Puangpen Sirirugsa - Alpinia conchigera Griff. Distinguished characters.- Inflorescence slender. Flower small. The lip pink to red. The ripe fruit bright red, small, about 7 mm. in diameter. Thailand.- Common in tropical rainforest. Distribution.- Bengal, Indochina, Malaysia, Sumatra. Uses.- The rhizome is stimulating, diaphoretic, regulating in uterine hemorrhage. It is used to treat bronchitis, jaundice, headache, vertigo, metritis. It is also used as external treatment for rheumatism and arthritis.

Le Jardin Ombragé - I have grown this plant since April 1998 in part sun. At times the foliage can get a little ragged looking, but all in all this is a beautiful foliage plant. I have protected it in winter or dug and kept in greenhouse, and it has rewarded me with beautiful blooms last year. I am growing in about 4 hours direct sun, and it is about 6 ft. tall. Foliage did not freeze back until temperatures dropped to the mid twenties. I am keeping it outside this year over winter.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia formosana Schumann:

NOTES:
Le Jardin Ombragé - I just received a rhizome of this from a friend who has been growing it locally for several years. She has found it to be very easy to grow, has it in part shade, clay soil, and it blooms reliably for her regardless of freezing back. In 2000 it grew to 6 ft tall, growing in part sun, healthy but has not bloomed. Foliage did not freeze back until temperatures dropped to the mid twenties. I am keeping it outside over winter.

The Study of Zingiberaceae in Thailand, by Puangpen Sirirugsa - Distinguished characters.- Rhizome pale yellow. Flower white. Thailand.- Cultivated. Distribution.- India, Indochina, The Philippines, Borneo and cultivated extensively in SE. Asia. Uses.- The rhizome is used for indigestion, colic, dysentery and cancer of the stomach. It is a remedy for food poisoning. The grated rhizome is prescribed for spleen trouble and herppes; an infusion of the leaves is for stimulant and antirheumatism. The fresh rhizome is also used as a spice for flavoring food.

Described in Flora of China, Vol. 24 (Flagellariaceae-Marantaceae). Science Press & Missouri Botanical Garden. Describes var. galanga and var. pyramidata.

http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/generic_frame.html?Afra_mel.html - Greater galangale, mostly referred to simply as galangale, is a very popular spice in whole South East Asia and especially typical for the cuisine of Thailand. It is also known and used in Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Southern China. Chinese five spice powder is sometimes enhanced with galangale (see star anis). In Western countries, however, galanga is not well known, at least in our days; it has, however, been a valued spice in the early Middle-ages. Galangale may be used fresh or dried. The pure and refreshing aroma of the fresh spice will change to a more medical and sweet taste by drying; most Thai cooks will, therefore, prefer the fresh rhizome whenever available. It appears frequently in Thai soups, stir-fries or curries (see coconut for a discussion on Thai curry pastes), cut in thin slices for soups or grated for curries. Like ginger, its aroma merges well with garlic. Indonesians, on the other hand, frequently use slices or powder of the fresh or dried rhizome, e.g., for nasi goreng (fried rice with vegetables and meat). Another well-known Indonesian dishes which makes use of dried galanga is rendang, a spicy beef (or buffalo) stew originally stemming from the minangkabau people in Western Sumatra. Cubed beef is cooked for at least one hour in thick coconut milk together with dried chiles, garlic and dried turmeric, ginger, Indonesian bay-leaves and galangale; some recipes additionally prescribe Indonesian cinnamon, black pepper or even fennel. The rather spicy cooking style of the minangkabau people, named nasi Padang "Padang-food" after their capital, is popular all over today's Indonesia. Galangale is sometimes confused with other spices of the ginger family; see lesser galangale for details. Its taste and appearance are, however, characteristic; it cannot be substituted by any other spice.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia henryi Schumann:

FLORA OF CHINA - Alpinia henryi K. Schumann, in Engler, Pflanzenr. IV. 46(Heft 20): 335. 1904. Syn. nov. TYPE: China. Hainan: without locality, Henry 8402 (holotype, B; isotype, K).
The types of all of the above four species were collected from Hainan Island. A comparison of the original descriptions, as well as photographs of the type collections of both Alpinia hainanensis and A. henryi, cast no doubt that all four represent a single species.

Described in Flora of China, Vol. 24 (Flagellariaceae-Marantaceae). Science Press & Missouri Botanical Garden. Listed under synonym A. hainanensis.

STOKES TROPICALS - A tall plant 5-6 ft with broad hairy leaves. It has large spickes fo the flowers in the spring that are creamy with many dark red lines. These flowers are remarkable because unlike other Alpinias, this has a strong honey-like fragrance. Prob. Zone 9.

COMMON NAME: dwarf Japanese ginger
OTHER NAMES & SYNONYMS:
FLOWERS: Red and White
HEIGHT: 2 ft
MIN. USDA HARDINESS ZONE: 7b
LIGHT PREFERENCE: part sun to shade
NOTES:
Le Jardin Ombragé - Maradee Cryer gave me this plant in April 1998 and it was blooming with gorgeous red and white flowers. I protected it the first winter (98-99) since it will only bloom on old growth, but it did not bloom that year. Then the following year, protected it again and it bloomed profusely in mid to late March. I am growing it in about 4 hours direct sun. (Height measured mid July = 2 ft.) This Alpinia seems to prefer more shade, as the leaves curl up tight during the mid-day sun and are slightly scorched despite sufficient moisture. This is by far the most cold hardy foliage of any ginger I have. As of mid-January 2001, the foliage is still green and healthy despite several cold snaps with temperatures in the mid twenties.

STOKES TROPICALS - long wave leaves fuzzy underneath. Small red and white striped flowers with a spiked inflorescence, main feature is the foliage, blooms in zone 8 on old growth, one of the hardiest, grows to 2 ft, zone 7b and higher.

FLORA OF CHINA - Alpinia (subg. Probolocalyx K. Schumann) jianganfeng T. L. Wu, sp. nov. TYPE: China. Guangdong: Lian Nan Xian, Z. S. Zhu 784 (holotype, IBSC).
Caulis ca. 1 m altus; folia lanceolata vel lineari-lanceolata, 20--30 cm longa, 2--4(--6) cm lata; ligula bifida, ca. 2 mm longa, ciliata; spica terminalis, 10--20 cm longa; rhachidi tomentosa; bracteola minuta; calyx cylindricus, apice tridentatus pubescens; corollae tubus 8--10 mm longus, lobis oblongis, 8--10 mm longis, villosis; staminodia lateralia lineares, ca. 2 mm longa; labellum obovatum, 0.7--1.3 mm longum, margine crispatum, apice bifidum; stamen labello longior; capsula globosa 7--8 mm diam., pubescens, apice calyce persistenti coronata; semina 5--6.
Plants herbaceous. Stems ca. 1 m long. Leaves sessile or with petioles to 4 cm; sheath glabrous; ligule ca. 2 mm long, 2-cleft, ciliate; leaf blade lanceolate to linear-lanceolate 20--30 cm long, 2--4(--6) cm wide, glabrous except for hispid subapical margin, base attenuate, apex narrowly caudate. Spikes terminal, erect, 10--20 cm long; rachis tomentose; bracts absent; bracteoles minute. Flowers in clusters of 3. Calyx cylindric, apex 3-cleft, pubescent outside. Corolla tube subequal or slightly longer than calyx; lobes oblong, 8--10 mm long, villous outside. Lateral staminodes linear, ca. 2 mm long. Labellum obovate, 0.7--1.3 cm long, margin crisped, apex 2-cleft. Stamen longer than labellum; anther ca. 4 mm. Ovary globose, pubescent. Capsule globose, 7--8 mm diam., pubescent, apex crowned with persistent calyx. Seeds 5 or 6.
Flowering April--June, fruiting June--November.
Alpinia jianganfeng is closely related to A. bambusifolia C. F. Liang & D. Fang, from which it differs in having glabrous sheaths, spikes 10--20 cm long, flowers in fascicles of 3, and a labellum 7--13 mm long with a crisp margin. In contrast, A. bambusifolia has pubescent sheaths, spikes 1.5--6 cm long, flowers in pairs or solitary along upper parts of the spike, and an entire labellum ca. 9 mm long.
Alpinia jianganfeng was misidentified by Wu and Chen (1981) as A. stachyodes Hance. However, the latter species has tomentose sheaths, ligules ca. 1 cm long, ovate or lanceolate bracts 1.5--2.5 cm long, lanceolate bracteoles 5--10 mm long, and a rhomboid-ovoid obscurely 3-lobed labellum. Plants of A. jianganfeng have glabrous sheaths, ligules ca. 2 mm long, no bracts, minute bracteoles, and an obovate 2-cleft labellum.

FINE GARDENING, July-Aug 1998 issue, article by Derek Burch, includes picture of A. luteocarpa. "Red bamboo ginger is one of the common names given to the 2 ft tall tight clumps of slender erect stems of this ginger grown for its foliage. The deep burgundy undersides of the leaves contrast nicely with the gray-green upper surfaces which are shown off by its upright growing habit.

THE TROPICAL LOOK - Native to Thailand, not root hardy outside zone 10, clumping species, 4-5 ft tall, many thin stems, olive green leaves with reddish purple underneath, sometimes called the Bamboo Ginger. (In an e-mail on the Tropicals forum on Garden Web, Bob Riffle said the following: "The ginger in question is Alpinia luteocarpa, one of the most tender (to cold) of the genus: 32'F. can kill it outright.

Le Jardin Ombragé - My specimen came from Maradee Cryer, who obtained it from a planting in Baton Rouge where it had been for over 15 years. Hers bloomed for the first time in spring 2000, and has grown to 5 ft tall, throwing the identification into doubt. My plant is 2 1/2 feet, as is typical of this plant. The leaves have the distinctive A. nutans fragrance, and appearance, but this could be another species or certainly an unusual form of A. nutans. I saw a similar blooming plant, believed to be A. nutans, at Huntington Gardens in Los Angeles. It was nearly 6 ft tall, with upright shell type inflorescense, and the distinctive aroma of A. nutans when the foliage is crushed. I now have two additional specimens from different sources. Foliage did not freeze back until temperatures dropped to the mid twenties. I have kept it outside over winter.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia nutans (L.) Roscoe:

ANGUS BOTANICAL PRINTS - TITLE: Alpinia nutans. [1828]. 1 print : lithograph, hand col. ; 54 x 42 cm. Published in William Roscoe, Monandrian Plants of the Order Scitamineae Chiefly Drawn from Living Specimens in the Botanical Gardens at Liverpool, pl. 73. [With origingal text description] Botanical illustration of a member of the ginger (Zingiberaceae) family. NOTE: According to Brian Middleditch, this illustration was an error on Roscoe's part. "As for Alpinia nutans, the nomenclature has been a comedy of errors. It has been misnamed by several botanists over the years, but the biggest mistake was made by the usually reliable (and very wealthy) English gentleman-botanist William Roscoe (1753-1831). Linnaeus had earlier named the species Globba nutans, but Roscoe realized that it was an Alpinia and named it Alpinia nutans. But he mistakenly thought that it was the same species as "Zerumbet speciosum" and compounded his error by publishing an illustration of the latter under the name Alpinia nutans. To complicate matters "Zerumbet speciosum" is now known as Alpinia zerumbet. "

THE TROPICAL LOOK - says A. nutans is syn. for A. zerumbet.

STOKES TROPICALS - has been incorrectly called Amomum cardamomum or "Cardamon" but is not true cardamon. Hardy foliage plant often used as shade groundcover. Rarely blooms but leaves smell of spice when rubbed, grows to 3 ft in shade, zone 7, great patio plant.

GAINESVILLE TREE FARM - most aromatic leaves of any ginger

SOUTHERN PERENNIALS - (Dwarf Cardamom). Ginger with aromatic leaves and roots. No flowers seen here - grown for foliage effect and as a spice. Shade; height 3-4', very bushy. Great for a mass planting of foliage. Java. Zones 8-10. Formerly offered as Amomum compactum.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia officinarum Hance: [common name is lesser galingale, but often the French name galanga is used]

Described in Flora of China, Vol. 24 (Flagellariaceae-Marantaceae). Science Press & Missouri Botanical Garden.

http://www-ang.kfunigraz.ac.at/~katzer/engl/generic_frame.html?Afra_mel.html - Contrasting the well-known greater galangale, lesser galangale is hardly known in the West and also not of much importance in South East Asia; actually, it seems to be used only by malaiic peoples in Malaysia and Indonesia (especially, in Java and Bali). Its strong aroma is less pleasant than that of greater galanga. Slices of the dried rhizome may be cooked with vegetable or meat dishes, but mostly the spice is used fresh and grated or crushed. It is essential to Javanese cooking (Rijstafel) and especially much used on the Indonesian island Bali (see Indonesian bay-leaf). The most famous dish owing its character in part to lesser galangale is Balinese roast duck bebek betulu, a favourite with tourists in Bali. A whole duck is rub inside and outside with a paste (Balinese jangkap, in Indonesian called bumbu, see lemon grass) made from onions, ginger, lemon grass, garlic, nuts, chiles, other spices and lesser galangale; after wrapping in banana leaves, the duck is first steamed and then baked in an oven which makes the meat extraordinarily tender. The result certainly justifies the effort. The fingerroot, another spice from the ginger family, is very frequently confused with lesser galangale. This spice consists of finger-like tubers sprouting from a lumpy central part and is therefore easily recognizable; its taste, however, resembles lesser galanga. Its main use is for fish curries (see coconut) in Thailand. Nice pictures of both rhizomes are shown by Norman. Another plant from the ginger family is zedoary, also called white turmeric. Although aromatic, it is, however, less important as a spice because of its rather strongly bitter taste.

From Maradee Cryer (McCry@aol.com) - I asked Glenn Stokes about Alpinia purpurata "Tahitian" and its hardiness here. He said that it could be grown but is very tempermental. You would have to bring it inside if the temperatures drop to 50 degrees or below. The leaves begin to curl at 50ø. It would have to be inside under a plant light that is set to come on a certain number of hours a day and it would have to be misted twice a day to keep the humidity up. In height it only reaches 4 feet so it is not one of the taller purpuratas.

STOKES TROPICALS - the only double flowered A. purpurata known.

FLOWERS: pink

NOTES:
Le Jardin Ombragé - newly planted spring 2000, this plant has been slow to establish. (NOTE: correct botanical name is A. vittata.) I lifted this plant and moved it to the greenhouse for the winter.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Alpinia sanderae: this is a horticultural name, never recognized by the botanists. Its botanical name is Alpinia vittata W. Bull. "Alpinia sanderae" was described as a "new" species by Henry Sander in 1903. But it is now considered to be identical with Alpinia vittata. Henry Sander (1847-1920) abused this species. He had the gall to name one specimen after himself (Alpinia sanderae). Then, on the same page of the Garden Chronicle (in 1903) he named another specimen Alpinia tricolor. Reminds me of the tactics that some assistant professors employ in a futile attempt at obtaining tenure. But this may not have been the case 97 years ago. Then, 34 years later, Henry Ridley made a brave attempt at persuading us that they were both Guillainia vittata. But the name Guillainia, first used by Vieillard in 1866 for Guillainia purpurata, had long been abandoned. We know that species as the luxuriant Alpinia purpurata. To complete the story, Alpinia vittata was the original name for the plant, and that name is still the correct name. Fully endorsed by Rosemary Smith.

THE TROPICAL LOOK - Native to New Guinea, seldow blooms in cultivation, variegated leaves, root hardy to zone 9B

STOKES TROPICALS - Like Alp. formosana, the foliage is outstanding. Not as cold hardy as formosana; must be greenhoused in Zone 9 except in very warmest winters. Has pink inflorescence with pink flowers. Grows to 5' in medium sun.

IMAGE AT FAIRCHILD TROPICAL GARDEN WEBSITE of Alpinia zerumbet

Listed as a naturlized species in Hawaii and Florida by the Biota of North America Program.

PADETEC, a Brazilian research park, affiliated with University Federal of Cear , has determined that there are kavatoids in A. zerumbet and sells an herbal medicinal made up of the ground up leaves, which they claim is an anti-hypertension and anti-stress medication.

THE TROPICAL LOOK - from China, to 12 ft high

http://www.barbadine.com/pages/alpinia_zerumbet_lien.htm - Another rhizomatous plant originating in north-eastern India, Burma and Indo-china. Its leafy arching canes reach three meters high, with narrowly ovale sessile leaves up to 50-60 cm long (one to two feet) and 10-15 cm wide, a shiny deep green. The dense end-shoot racemes are up to 30 cm long (one foot) and made of many porcelain textured flowers. Those flowers are shiny white, the corolla tipped with yellow, with a red flushed throat. A quite similar plant but with variegated and somewha broader leaves is the A. zerumbet 'Variegata'. Quite easy to grow from rhizome, it will happilly grow in full sun, even on rather poor soil but with enough water supply as it is water-demanding. It may also grow in semi-shaded places but will be more shy flowering then, its foliage remaining always a nice decorative item, as well in the garden as in a green-house, in the open or in an earthenware jar, big enough so that the plant may develop its rather powerful rhizomes.

GARDEN COMPANION - A large and attractive perennial grown for its glossy, rich green foliage and fragrant flower clusters. Grows quickly and will eventually reach a height of 10 feet or more. Once established this plant will tolerate some drought as long as it has good light and a moderately rich soil. Flower clusters appear intermittently during the year, but especially during the spring. Blooms are large clusters of waxy, white flowers which open to reveal a vivid orange interior. They are fragrant and long-lasting. Foliage is available in either a deep green or variegated form.

SOUTHERN PERENNIALS - This ginger could be grown for foliage value alone, as the leaves are large, glossy, dark green, and leathery. Flowers, which appear on the second year's growth, are big, drooping terminal clusters of pink, yellow, and white. Ultimate height is 10', but usually shorter in Zone 8. Will not flower here unless container grown and protected in winter. Happy in full sun or full shade. East Asia. Hardy to 0øF. Zones 7-11.

TEXAS A & M IMAGE ) Image available from the Vascular Plant Image Gallery. Synonymy: Alpinia speciosa (Wendl.) K. Schum., Catimbium speciosum (Wendl.) Holttum, Languas speciosa (Wendl.) Merr.

STOKES TROPICALS - Called "shell" ginger. Makes a good solid green foliage plant. Blooms in southern areas with mild winters. Large pendant inflorescence with white and pink flowers. Can be grown in full sun but will thrive in some shade. Can grow to 10' -12'.

ALOHA TROPICALS - Broad dark green leaves that are long lasting and used in arrangements. This ginger puts out gracefully arching sprays of delicate flowers resembling white sea shells, tipped pink with a red and yellow lip. Will tolerate some frost. A very open lush plant (give it plenty of room to grow). Makes an excellent landscape subject.

STOKES TROPICALS - Called "variegated shell" ginger. Makes a beautiful foliage plant with outstanding yellow variegation. Following warm winters produces large pendant inflorescence with white and pink flowers like the regular shell ginger. Can grow to 6' - 7' and tolerates winter temperatures into the 20's. Grows best in some shade but can tolerate full sun.

ALOHA TROPICALS - The blooms of this ginger are the same as its green cousin, the only difference is the beautiful yellow marbled variegation in the leaves. Height to 6'

http://www.barbadine.com/pages/alpinia_zerumbet_'sp.'_lie.htm - This is the variegated form of Alpinia zerumbet, with a more compact habit, the leaves being shorter and broader than in the species, somewhat more like an Hedychium. The plant will reach some five to seven feet high (1,5 to 2 m). The flowers are identical to the ones of the non variegated, althought somewhat smaller. The growth requirements are the same. The main interest is obviously the foliage, highly effective all year round.

PLANTATION GARDENS - Grows to about 6 feet tall. The foliage is boldly variegated. A real showpiece. Blooms on last years growth. Will not stand frost. Makes an excellent pot plant for the shaded deck. PICTURE OF FOLIAGE
